Assurance in Difficult Decisions

I don’t know about you, but I have a hard time looking at the news or scrolling social media. All I see is: coronavirus, the vaccination, the delta variant and honestly I’m weary of hearing it. Everyone is in a tizzy over getting a shot. Last year it was the mask and now here we are hearing rumors of vaccine mandates. Praise the Lord for the assurance we have with Jesus Christ!

Before you leave me, give me a few minutes, please 🙏🏻

This is not a political piece about rather or not I think you should vaccinate.

This is a piece about making impossible decisions.

One common thing I’m noticing during this unprecedented time is people’s inability to decide. It makes me think of the episode of friends when Ross can’t make a choice between Rachel or Julie. I can hear Phoebe singing

“you must decide, you must decide, even though I made this up you jsut deciiii-iide”

Do you feel overwhelming anxiety trying to decide what is right for you and your family? Have a pit in your stomach that won’t ease?

Don’t make decisions in fear.

I’ve talked a lot lately about Jesus sending our advocate the Holy Spirit. He sent us this advocate for a reason. He knew we would have times in our lives where impossible decisions must be made.

In John 18, we read about Jesus being brought to the high priest for questioning. After some back and forth Pilate asked

““What is truth?” Pilate asked. Then he went out again to the people and told them, “He is not guilty of any crime. But you have a custom of asking me to release one prisoner each year at Passover. Would you like me to release this ‘King of the Jews’?” But they shouted back, “No! Not this man. We want Barabbas!” (Barabbas was a revolutionary.)” John 18:38-40

Pilate knew Jesus was innocent. He gave the Romans a chance to free Jesus. They chose Barabbas.

The popular choice at that time was to execute Jesus. Jesus was innocent, but the beauty in all of this. What seemed to be the wrong choice, was indeed what saved us!

No matter how you decide during this awful time of finger pointing and berating,

Jesus is still on the throne. He is still our king rather you wear a mask, get a shot or don’t. You have to get on your knees and pray for guidance, wisdom.

Please remember what James tell us

But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere. And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness.” James 3:17-18 NLT

We must be peacemakers! However we decide, we must do so peacefully.

James also tells us

So whatever you say or whatever you do, remember that you will be judged by the law that sets you free.” James 2:12 NLT

When I can’t decide. I pray. I ask God for Wisdom. Sometimes he gives me answers directly. Sometimes he points me in the direction to someone who can shed better light on the situation.

Our own personal baggage can weigh us down so heavy that we can’t see clearly, and consulting someone we trust is necessary.

The Romans couldn’t see past their religion to see they were putting an innocent man on a cross. Pilate tried to be reasonable and give them an out.

Are you being weighed down by science or religion? Is your stubbornness blinding you from making a reasonable decision?

Vaccinated or not we are all being judged by the law that sets us FREE. We are free and the Holy Spirit will guide is in the right direction.

Pray. Consult people you trust. People you know aren’t clouded by propaganda, but also someone who is thinking differently than you. Getting advice from only people who agree with you isn’t helpful. Have peaceful conversations/debates.

You’ll know when you’ve found the person that is making a reasonable argument. That person will be peaceful and not judgmental.

You’re not wrong if you get vaccinated nor are you wrong if you don’t. You are wrong if you berate and belittle people who choose differently than you.

When you decide, you must be ok with that decision and let the fear go. Let the worry go.

Sleep well at night based off that decision.

Lord,

I pray you would give us all the wisdom and knowledge we need to make decision based off your guidance and only yours. I pray that whoever reads this will have a peace about the decision they are making for their families. I pray we would peacefully make holy decisions. Give us strength to weather this storm and help us all remember what matters.

You matter and your mission matters. Thank you for your Son. Thank you for giving us free will to choose. Lord I choose you. I choose your freedom and love.

Amen
