Daddy’s Favorite

I can remember, as a child, hearing the story of Joseph and the coat of many colors. I can actually still see my child-like self sympathizing with the brothers because they were jealous. If truth were known that is why I remembered that story instead of some of the other stories about Joseph.

That story doesn’t really show Joseph in a real good light. He was daddy’s favorite and told his brothers he was going to rule over them one day. 🤨 Not exactly what all his older brothers wanted to hear.

Joseph had a gift of interpreting dreams. Even though his siblings were peeved, his vision wasn’t wrong.

Some of you may wander how on Earth I come up with things to say weekly. Believe me, I shock myself sometimes. This week I’ve been stuck. When I have stuck weeks like this I refer back to a document where I keep a list of verses I write down that have really spoken to me.

The verse I was brought to was Genesis 41:16

Joseph answered Pharaoh, “It is not in me; God will give Pharaoh a favorable answer”

When I read it, I thought what you are..”What on earth spoke through that?”

At this point of Joseph’s story, he was in prison. He had been there for two years after Potiphar’s wife got her feelings hurt and had him put there. Even in prison he gained favor with the keeper. While in prison he interpreted two prisoner’s dreams. Those interpretations laid the ground work for what is happening here in chapter 41.

Pharaoh had a bad dream. He had gotten word of Joseph’s gift, and sent for him.

This brings us here. If you back up one verse you see what pharaoh led with

“And Pharaoh said to Joseph, I have had a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it. I have heard it said of you that when you hear a dream you can interpret it”

Do you have someone in your life who always gets everything?!? for real everything always seems to go their way. Steve always gets the promotion, stacey always gets first choice, ugh Ben’s life is so easy…etc

Im pretty sure there were people in Joseph’s life who thought the same way.

Coat of many colors

Potipher’s favorite (until little miss wifey seduced and sabotaged him)

Prison keepers right hand man

Pharaoh’s second in command

On the surface, it seems as though Joseph had an “in” with the big man. The secret of Joseph is where credit was given. “It is not in me”

Wow. This is the same man who was sold into slavery after his siblings jealousy got the best of them, and thrown in jail because he wouldn’t sleep with another’s man wife.

It’s amazing how your brain shifts towards empathy when you see the misfortune.

Even in his darkest trials, Joseph was still successful and well taken care of. God was with him “The Lord was with Joseph and he became a successful man, and he was in the house of this Egyptian master. Genesis 39:2

Has life dealt you some tough situations lately? Are you feeling like everyone around you is getting married, promoted, pregnant, or on vacation?

Joseph was thrown in a pit, assumed dead, sold to slavery, promoted, put in prison, promoted, and then reunited with his father. He had some pretty tough life situations but at the end of the day he still said “It is not in me”

It is not in us ya’ll. God will give us a favorable outcome. Joseph kept the faith whole heartedly despite his circumstance, and he gave God the credit.

Stop looking at Steve, Stacey, Ben and all those instagram vacationers. You’re only seeing the promotions. No one chooses to post about the lows. If Joseph had the choice he probably would not have written about the dreams he told his brother. He would probably think the only thing worth sharing was the victories, but those victories wouldn’t be as beautiful without the valleys. There is a reason you always hear the phrase “Praise him on the mountain and in the valley”. You can’t climb a mountain without going through a valley.

Look up.

Stop looking side to side

Give praise

Dear God,

Thank you for my valleys. Thank you for always being with me. I pray that those reading this will stop looking at the people beside them and look up to you. Praise you and give you all the glory for the good things that have happened. Nothing good that has happened to us is because we did it, it is not in us. It is you. You are the constant and I pray we would stop and give credit where credit is due. In Jesus precious name

Amen
