House Rules

At my house we have some house rules for my kiddos. They are very simple and I adopted them from my favorite mom book, “Moms on Call”. That book was my lifeline during the first 6 months of my first child’s life. After that it became a random resource for me when I would go through tough phases with my little one. The house rules they suggested were these

1. Obey mom and dad

2. Don’t hurt yourself

3. Don’t hurt other people

Then you add your own personal tag “we are the Yeager’s and we show Jesus love to EVERYONE”.

Every single night from the time my oldest was 18months until about 3 years old, I recited these house rules. You would be quite shocked at how well she adopted these rules and how well she comprehended the importance. It was the consequences of not following those rules that have been harder for her to understand.

The concept of obedience is not difficult, but the that is what gets people.

When a child disobeys sometimes the consequence is a spanking and other times they suffer the result of the choice.

Clear as mud…right?

Don’t climb the stairs—-> child climbs, parent saves and then spanks for disobeying.

Don’t climb the stairs—> child climbs, parent doesn’t intervene, child falls off stairs.

Children needs rules to protect them; and Christians need rules to protect them.

Is it really that simple?

Simple to understand but our human sinful nature makes it hard to live.

Are you being disobedient?

Maybe running from overdue repentance? I ran for a long time before I laid it all down and begged for forgiveness.

I started this blog a year ago in the hopes of encouraging Christians to stop running. To pivot, repent and watch our heavenly Father bring life back to dry bones. Over the last year I’ve gained 31 subscribers 😱. Such an incredible encouragement and along this writing journey I have felt the:

“what’s the point”

“where am I going with this”

“does anyone even care”

God quickly reminds me- because I asked you to.

What’s He asking you to do?

Dear God,

I pray for revival. I pray for the lukewarm Christians to have the fire reignited. I pray for repentance and for a generation of Christian’s to stop disobeying and follow your call. I pray the reader who feels lost and doesn’t know how to move forward will get clarity. Lord, like Ezekiel prophesied I pray for life back in all the bones of your believers. I pray we all repent and make way for the return of our savior. Amen

“So I prophesied as I was commanded; and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and suddenly a rattling; and the bones came together, bone to bone. Indeed, as I looked, the sinews and the flesh came upon them, and the skin covered them over; but there was no breath in them. Also He said to me, “Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live.” ’ ” So I prophesied as He commanded me, and breath came into them, and they lived, and stood upon their feet, an exceedingly great army.” Ezekiel 37:7-10 NKJV

  1. Absolutely awesome! We have house rules and spoken daily affirmations with Carter. I need to add speaking the house rules to our routine. Sometimes you think/assume they are just understood. Insightful thanks Emily!

  2. Loved reading this. Common sense rules need to be reinforced daily. Protect those babies. His word will not return void.
