Mismatched PJs

My oldest child is four and she has gotten to an age where I find it necessary to teach small lessons of independence. Yes I know she is only four.. but you have to start somewhere right?!?

Both our children’s rooms are upstairs. Needless to say, I tend to get lazy about what motivates me to go up there. I bundle all my task and get real creative about not having to make extra trips.

One evening we were preparing for the night time routine and the last THREE nights the oldest had wet the bed. (On Friday’s we don’t do the normal bath routine). Because of all the tee tee PJs there was a random pair of pants and random shirt in the dryer. I brought them out for my daughter to get dressed.

Y’all 🙄

“Mom they’re not matching”

I told her it doesn’t matter.

She fussed.

I could have gotten up and given in to her irrational need to have matching PJs, but I really didn’t feel like making that extra treck upstairs. So I told her she could go up there and get the matching top herself.

Y’all 🙄

I wish I had a picture of the drama that ensued.

Guess what??

I didn’t budge. She said she couldn’t go alone, she was scared, all the things that you can think of to get out of going. I jsut politely encouraged her, as did her dad.

2 minutes later

“Mom, I’ll just wear these”

These small lessons lead into to very big lessons. If I don’t have the guts to tell her no now and to give into her little fits what good am I doing her?

Have you ever wandered if God says

“Jesus you aren’t gonna believe what Emily did today…. “

Jesus : 🙄y’all!

We do ridiculous things every single day. We ask for unreasonable things and get mad when we don’t get it. We focus on ourself nonstop and wonder why our relationships around us crumble.

We don’t need the matching PJs, we just need to be clothed.

Clothed with the armor of God.

My daughter put the mismatched PJs on, hopped up in my lap and we snuggled and giggled while we watched the rest of her show.

Children want and need discipline.

Christians want and need discipline as well.

If we suit up in our armor he’ll do the rest. He’ll carry us through.

“Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.”Ephesians 6:11 ESV
“But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation.” 1 Thessalonians 5:8 ESV

Dear God,

I’m sorry for making you go 🙄, I pray you’ll forgive me my moments of utter selfishness and whining over doing small task that genuinely won’t hurt me. I pray for wisdom and strength to continue the good fight and to continually suit up. Thank you for your unwavering love and faithfulness. In Jesus name

Amen
