You are the Source of Negativity

I’ve gotten to where I laugh now when I hear or see the statement:

“Man I am so tired of all this negativity, can you believe …..” then you go on to hear or read the awful scenario said person experienced.

Positivity starts with you. You have control over how your environment and situations pan out.

“But Emily, I can not control my rude coworker who gripes and complains about EVERYTHING”

You are right; you can’t. You can stop it right there though. When the situation moves on to person to person the spiral of negativity continues.

Over the last month I have been part of an incredible fitness program. Not only have I learned the importance of discipline, I have also learned the power of positive behavior and positive thoughts. It starts the moment your feet hit the floor in the morning.

What does this look like?

You wake up and look in the mirror.

What is your first thought?

What are the first words out of your mouth?

Those first few thoughts and words set the tone of your day. When you decide to stop calling yourself fat, ugly, tired, exhausted, worn out and alone; you will start to see yourself in a better light.

No matter what your circumstances are; you are blessed. Yes, you. You are blessed to have that job where your coworker drives you up the wall. You are blessed to have a bed you sleep in.

You are blessed to have those screaming kids that test your every nerve.

I urge you to start small. Set a real small goal. Tomorrow when you wake up, I want you to look in mirror and say “I am beautiful, I am created in my Fathers image and He loves me right where I am”

Do not speak a single negative word about your appearance or your condition. You may very well be in an awful situation BUT speaking it out loud brings it out to the others around you. The other innocent bystanders who also feel all the same things.

When you train your brain to stop being so awful towards yourself, then your actions will spill over into other parts of your life AND the people around you.

Negative breeds negative.

Positive breeds positive.

If you’ve ever been close to someone with a cancer diagnosis I know you’ve seen someone at a terrible point in life. One of my closest friends recently experienced this and y’all. Guess what?? She did not complain. She did not stop and say “poor pitiful me”. No she chose to live. Now she lives a cancer free life.

James 1:2-3 says

“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.”

The word trial here is unique. It’s easy to think that means “an increasingly difficult time” but the definition says otherwise

Trial- a PERSON, thing, or SITUATION that tests a persons endurance

A trial can be training for a 5k, eating correctly, losing weight, a difficult coworker, an illness .. etc

When you find joy in each test and find the positive you will move into vs 4

“And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”

James 1:4 ESV

“Perfect and complete”

Now that is positive … am I right?!?

Let me just tell you. The last four weeks have been HARD! I have had to pass up on food that I love. I have had to pack my food and sacrifice a lot of time and energy towards a goal of health. This has been a trial.

Writing weekly blogs to encourage and inspire my fellow Christian’s is hard and it tests my faith, but the end is beautiful! The end is standing in front of my savior and hearing the words “well done”

You can not control what others do, but you can change how you respond. Don’t give in to the negative conversations. Smile and politely walk away. Who cares if it seems rude. You’re not in the wrong. You are not continuing the circle of negativity.

Dear Lord,

Help us stop the spiral of negativity. Help us be wise in our actions and words we speak out loud. Lord I ask we can live by the words of James and find joy in every single test or trial that comes our way. Thank you for calling me to goodness and love. Thank you for this beautiful platform you’ve placed before me and Lord I pray just one person will wake up tomorrow and choose to be positive. You are perfect and complete and I pray we continue to find our joy in that fact. Lord I pray our culture can turn this around and be positives lights to lost souls.

In Jesus name
